Our Story

Story of forming the Association of Better Health and Society-ABHAS

The true progress of a nation is not measured only by its economic growth or technological advancement, but by the everyday conduct of its people—reflected in cleanliness, civic sense, and respect for shared public spaces. While India has made remarkable strides over the past 75 years, rapid development coupled with uneven literacy levels and socio-economic disparities has left significant gaps in public hygiene, civic responsibility, and social etiquette.

During my travels across the United States and Europe, I observed how deeply civic sense is ingrained in daily life—whether it is disciplined driving, respect for public property, or basic hygienic practices. On returning home, the contrast was often unsettling. Indiscriminate spitting in public places, unsafe coughing and sneezing practices, careless disposal of waste, and a general disregard for shared spaces had become commonplace, not only in cities but also in towns and villages. These behaviours, when compounded daily, contribute to unhygienic environments, preventable illnesses, and a diminished quality of life.

It became increasingly clear to me that these challenges could not be addressed by infrastructure or legislation alone. Lasting change requires awareness, understanding, and personal responsibility. With this conviction, the Association of Better Health and Society was founded in 2002 with a simple yet powerful mission: to educate, sensitize, and empower people to adopt healthier, cleaner, and more responsible ways of living.

The Association was envisioned as a bridge between scientific knowledge, community awareness, and public action. Our efforts focus on highlighting the health consequences of poor hygiene, unsafe waste disposal, and neglect of civic duties, while also demonstrating practical, achievable solutions. Through focused interventions, awareness programs, community engagement, and model initiatives in selected areas, we aim to complement governmental efforts and inspire behavioural change at the grassroots level.

About

At its core, the Association believes that a cleaner society leads to a healthier population, and a healthier population forms the foundation of a stronger nation. Change begins with awareness, but it is sustained through collective responsibility and individual action. This belief continues to guide our journey.
