Prof. (Dr.) Sarman Singh

Prof. Sarman Singh is a distinguished teacher, mentor, innovator, author, and clinical microbiologist with over four decades of experience in medicine, laboratory sciences, and academic leadership. He is widely recognized for championing translational research with direct societal impact, spanning medicine, basic sciences, and engineering.
Being disturbed with the poor hygienic condition prevailing in the metropolitan to rural settings of the country and lack of civic sense in in majority of Indian, he formed an Association for Better Health and Society in 2002, while he was still working at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
Prof. Singh completed his graduation (BSc) from Agra University and MBBS from reputed and one of the oldest King George’s Medical College Lucknow in 1982 and then Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from another prestigious organisation – the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India in 1987. He joined the country’s premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in 1988 as a Clinical Microbiologist and rose to the rank of full Professor in 2007, making seminal contributions to translational medicine and infectious disease research, specially in the field of Public Health, Mycobacteriology and Parasitology. In 2018, he was appointed Director & CEO of AIIMS, Bhopal, a position he held until his superannuation in November 2021. During this period, he also served as the Founder Director of AIIMS, Bibi Nagar (Telangana) from 2019 to 2020, demonstrating exceptional leadership as both a scientist and an institution builder.
Driven by a vision to bridge scientific innovation with public health needs, Prof. Singh established the Centre for Translational Medicine at AIIMS Bhopal. Following retirement from AIIMS, he mentored the Medical Sciences and Engineering Research (MEDSER) Centre at IISER Bhopal until February 2024. He subsequently served as Director of Medical Research at AV Medical College & Hospital, Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (Deemed University), Puducherry, until September 2025. He currently serves as Founder & Director of the Advanced Centre for Chronic and Rare Diseases (ACCORD-Asha) Delhi, and Director & CEO of SDTECH Placement Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi.
Prof. Singh is a Fellow of seven prestigious academies and professional societies, including the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCP), the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (FRSTMH), and National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) to name a few. He is a member of more than 25 national and international scientific organizations. His contributions have been recognized through over 30 national and international awards, particularly for the development of sensitive, affordable diagnostic technologies for infectious diseases. He holds seven patents, one of which has been successfully commercialized.
A committed mentor, Prof. Singh has guided 32 PhD scholars, 40 DM/MD/MS specialist doctors, and over 65 MSc students. His prolific scholarly output includes six books, 52 book chapters, and 405 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as The Lancet, The Lancet Global Health, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Cell, PNAS, and BMJ. His work has garnered over 16,000 citations, with an H-index of 67 and an i10-index of 253, and he has been consistently ranked among the top 2% of microbiologists globally by Stanford University for the past five consecutive years.
Prof. Singh currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Laboratory Physicians and Section Editor for PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. He is also an Academic Editor for Medicine, PLoS One, and Tuberculosis Research and Treatment, among others. In addition, he serves on more than 40 editorial boards and contributes to numerous high-level national and international committees, including grant review panels for the UK Medical Research Council, Ministries of Germany, Italy, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia, and expert bodies in India such as ICMR, DBT, DST, BIRAC, DHR, NAAC, NMC (formerly MCI), MoHFW, CCSEA, and several universities and research institutions.
